Nonetheless, it’s worth returning to the question: what is surround sound? Typically, when this kind of system is installed in a lounge or media room, it is what is known as a 5.1 system – so-called as it consists of five speakers and a bass subwoofer.
However, for a larger space, such as a home cinema, a 7.1 system might be more fitting. Installing a surround sound system in this form entails placing another two speakers behind the audience, meaning that seven speakers are installed in total.
The result is an even more immersive effect – as, while you can rely on the system’s front-centre speakers to hear dialogue, speakers to the back and side can handle ambient sound effects, such as sounds of leaves rustling or raindrops hitting a window.
